Description:

Dive into the magical world of Nakshi Kantha and Bengali folklore in this creative, hands-on workshop! Explore the rich motifs and cultural significance of traditional Nakshi Kantha patterns while drawing inspiration from tales of Bengali ghosts (bhoots) and mythical monsters. Participants will learn illustration techniques to bring these spooky characters to life and adapt them into playful, modern children's book illustrations. No prior experience is needed—just bring your imagination!

This workshop is part of the Threads of Tales project by Bok Bok Books and HerStory, supported by the British Council International Collaboration Grants.

Facilitated by: Rumana Yasmin, Katerina Don, and Farah Khandaker.

Facilitator’s Profile:

Rumana Yasmin is the founder of Bok Bok Books, an independent publishing company aimed at celebrating South Asian culture and people in children's books.
Katerina Don is a writer and curator of HerStory Foundation. She loves trans-cultural trans-traditional collaboration and collage art-forms.
Farah Khandaker is a digital illustrator based in Toronto, with a passion for bold colours, surrealism, and nostalgia. With degrees in Visual Art and Advertising, she has worked on a variety of projects, and her illustrated books have been published both locally and internationally. She is currently collaborating with Bok Bok Books and Her Story on their upcoming project, Threads of Tales.

Workshop Outline:

Introduction to Nakshi Kantha:

Explore the cultural significance and storytelling heritage of Nakshi Kantha motifs with Katerina from HerStory.

Storytelling:

Dive into spooky tales from Bengali folklore, focusing on the mysterious world of bhoots and mythical monsters. Learn visual storytelling techniques with Rumana from Bok Bok Books to bring these ghostly characters to life.

Illustration:

Combine traditional Nakshi Kantha motifs with modern illustration styles to sketch playful but spooky children's book characters, guided by Farah Khandaker.

Collaborative Design:

Work together to create a group illustration layout—a vibrant Nakshi Kantha-inspired feast for the bhoots, blending traditional patterns and ghostly fun.

Description: Immerse yourself in the exquisite world of one of the oldest and finest textiles produced in the world rooted in the heart of Sonargaon, Bangladesh is the Dhakai Jamdani. Join us on this experience of a lifetime to sit on the handloom and weave your first jamdani textile. Dive into the world of this finest craftsmanship and learn about the heirloom-worthy fabric directly from award winning and internationally exhibited master craftsman Rajon Miah.

Facilitated by: Dhārā featuring Master Weavers: Rajon Miah and Artist: Tasleema Anam

Facilitator’s Profile:
Dhārā: A residency rooted at the banks of the Shitalakshya River, Dhārā aims to decolonize craft in Bangladesh. The team includes experienced designers, craft leaders, academics, multilingual facilitators, and storytellers, collaborating with the Jamdani community in Demra, Sonargaon, Bangladesh.

Elem Miah is a distinguished master weaver and Jamdani artisan, recognized by the National Craft Council of Bangladesh for his contributions to preserving cultural heritage. A co-founder of Sonia Jamdani Ghar in Demra, Elem Miah is a prominent figure in Jamdani weaving, continuing a tradition dating back to the British colonial period.

Rajon Miah, son of Elem Miah, is a co-founder of Sonia Jamdani Ghar and a skilled Jamdani artisan with over 20 years of experience. Known for his expertise in reviving heritage Jamdani motifs, Rajon’s work has been showcased in exhibitions across London, India, and America.

Separate Yarn – Wheel: Begin at the origin, unraveling the threads with your hands. Learn to prepare the yarn, the foundation for every Jamdani masterpiece.

Past Meets Present

Small Convo – Storytelling: Sit in a circle of shared stories—personal memories and collective tales—connecting Jamdani’s threads with Dhaka’s living culture.

Plotting the Motif

15-Minute Graph Plotting: Guided by a master of Jamdani motifs, sketch your own design—a personal emblem of creativity within the legacy of this craft.

On the Loom – Rhythm of Hands

Weave Your Motif: Feel the weight and rhythm of the loom, weaving your motif into fabric under the guidance of skilled artisans. Let the loom teach you patience and precision.

Each participant will receive a curated kit that captures the essence of Jamdani and Dhārā’s spirit that is a co-creation between you, the artisans, and Dhārā – ধারা Timeless Memories of Demra.

Description: Ride the waves of Matarbari, a small island of Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, in this storytelling workshop. Design your own comic book through the eyes of an adventurous fisherman, a fierce Nakshi Kantha weaver, an award-winning birdwatcher, and a local plant scientist, all stuck on the island due to cyclone Rema. Join us and weave the stories to life as you become one of these characters!

Facilitator’s Profile:
Tirtho is a visual artist and graphic designer based in Dhaka. His works reflect the dilemmas, despair, and values of contemporary society.

Kusum Begum is a master weaver in Nakshi Kantha from Tangail. She started her work in Nakshi Kantha to support her family and now she works with 200 women across town empowering them to build on their artistry. She has worked in projects such as Matarbari Tales with ULAB and Broqué, to share her knowledge on designs, translating artworks through stencils on textiles and stitching techniques.

Mahenaz Chowdhury is an artist, cultural activist, and passionate advocate for preserving and revitalising South Asian textiles, focusing on traditional crafts such as Nakshi Kantha and Jamdani weaving, both of which embody rich histories and sustainable practices. She is also the founder of Broqué, a conscious streetwear label that creates abstract, ethically made one-off-pieces. Her work emphasises storytelling as a medium to connect communities, amplify marginalised voices, and challenge colonial narratives that have shaped perceptions of our cultural heritage. Through her practice, she integrates traditional craft techniques with innovative, zero-waste design approaches, fostering ecological and social resilience. As the founder of Broqué, she has pioneered storytelling-based upcycling workshops that engage youth and community members to rediscover and embody South Asian cultural roots.

Dacca: A Bangladesh-based label that offers a nuanced commentary on the enduring legacy of Bengali craftsmanship and artisanal techniques. By engaging with their historical and cultural significance, Dacca reimagines these traditions in a contemporary context.

Broqué: A conscious, zero-waste streetwear label that creates abstract, one-off pieces with textile surpluses and handloom textiles. It integrates traditional craft techniques with innovative, zero-waste design approaches, fostering ecological and social resilience. Broqué has pioneered storytelling-based upcycling workshops that engage youth and community members to rediscover and embody South Asian cultural roots. The brand philosophy centers on slowing down time, focusing on finest craftsmanship that surpasses the test of time by rebelling against mass production.
